Weekly Devotional

January 25, 2010

God’s peace be with you all.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-16  9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.  10 For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help.  11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone?  12 And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.  13 Better is a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king, who will no longer take advice.  14 One can indeed come out of prison to reign, even though born poor in the kingdom.  15 I saw all the living who, moving about under the sun, follow that youth who replaced the king;  16 there was no end to all those people whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

If we were to put a title to the above passage, it would be “the value of a friend.”  I think this past Saturday was a chance for all of us to think about the value of our friends.  We had a very successful community meal in which we met new people, fed the hungry, and truly got to feel what it was like to be a part of God’s mission in this place.

Now that we know that A) we are capable of doing this type of event, and B) that it is successful, it is time for use to start planning the next one.  February is already a busy month, in that we have the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper.  March and April bring us in the Lenten and Easter seasons, and May bring us the end of the spring school semester and the beginning of summer break.  If we wait till June to plan something else, we would have waited too long.  So, we need to be planning an event that will happen right in the middle of our busy spring.

Mary Lou Saville will soon return from all her worldly travels and will be able to help us with ideas and suggestions.  What we as a congregation need to do is also help her.  Even though she continues in the role of Chair of Evangelism and Outreach, we don’t place all this on her shoulders the minute she comes back.  As the author of Ecclesiastes wrote, “Two are better than one..”  Now is the time for us to keep up our momentum that we all showed this past Saturday night, so that our next event can be bigger and better.  Please start thinking of ideas now.  When you think of something good,  write it down and let us know so that we can get started sooner than later!

In our prayers this week:  Wendi, Ann, Joseph, Lisa, Kim, Robert, Eunice (Home from the hospital), and Catherine

God’s Peace,

Pastor Judson
