Weekly Devotional

November 3, 2008

Numbers 6:22 -27     22 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:  23 Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the Israelites: You shall say to them,  24 The LORD bless you and keep you;  25 the LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you;  26 the LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.  27 So they shall put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.

There are many places in our liturgy where we quote scripture.  The most well known are contained within the Great Thanksgiving (The Eucharistic liturgy).  However, there are places where we have other scripture quoted.  For example, look at the priestly benediction above.  Now I am sure most of you have heard a pastor at one point say this, but did you know it came from the Bible?  Perhaps you could guess it was from the Bible, but who would guess that it was a benediction used my Aaron and spoke to the Israelites?

Another place where we quote scripture involves the lessons that we had yesterday.  While we don’t sing “This is the Feast” with setting 5 of the WOV, it’s a song you can all hum in your head.  Do you know the words?  The third “verse” of it is a direct quote of what we had yesterday in our first reading.  “Blessings, honor, glory, and might be to God and the Lamb forever.”  How many of you knew you were quoting scripture when you sang this?

There are plenty of other places in our liturgy where we quote scripture.  See if you are able to pick any of them out.  I will give you an easy one to get started:  Where does the Lord’s Prayer come from and is it the same in the Bible as what we say? (Hints: Matthew 6 and Luke 11).  See what else you can find on your own, but please don’t do it during the sermon.

In our prayers this week:

Ann, Alma, Norm and Jane, Doris and her mom.

God’s Peace,

Pastor Judson
