KJV 2 Timothy 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
On this day in which we remember those that have served their country, we celebrate that we have many freedoms that others in the world do not have. We have the freedom to help others, to liberate them from harm, terror, and the pains of unyielding rulers. On this same day, we have the chance to pray for peace in the world, to pray that those who serve our country may come home safely, and that those who cause pain throughout the world will be stopped. However, this is not always easy. I am reminded of the first Christians in the world, some of which lost their lives for the faith that they believed in so much. I am reminded that Paul suffered day and night, fighting for the faith that he believed in. I am reminded of those that fought in the crusades, fighting for Christianity. I am reminded of Martin Luther, who would not back down to the pope and his misleading messages. And I am reminded of people in my own family.
Both of my grandfathers served in WW2, one in the Army, and one in the
Navy. I know that what they were fighting for was much the same as those before them had fought for, freedom from oppression and tyranny. The sad part about wars and fighting for freedom is that some never live to see the end result. So on this day when we do remember those that have fought for freedom, let us remember those who are still alive, and those who paid the ultimate price for something they believed in so strongly. Furthermore, let us continue to pray for peace in the whole world, hoping that one day all wars will cease, spears and swords will be beat into plowshares, and the reign of God will rule forever in this place.
Let us pray:
Violence never again!
War Never Again!
Terrorism never again!
In God’s name, may all religions
Bring upon earth justice and peace,
Forgiveness, life, and love! Amen.
~Pope John Paul II
